- A tang is the tapered end of the file that can either be used to hold the file or inserted it into an optional handle.; Bastard cut files are the coarsest files and have the fewest teeth per inch. They are used for heavy stock removal.; Double cut files consist of two sets of teeth crisscrossing each other at opposite angles. They are used for heavy stock removal.; Warding files are designed for filing or repairing  wards in locks and keys. They have a thin design and used in spaces too narrow for other files to fit.
