- A tang is the tapered end of the file that can either be used to hold the file or inserted it into an optional handle.; Bastard cut files are the coarsest files and have the fewest teeth per inch. They are used for heavy stock removal.; Single cut files consist of one set of parallel, diagonal teeth extended across the face of the file. They are used for sharpening or to produce a smooth finish.; Taper files are triangular and designed for filing a variety of saws. The file has cut edges for filing gullets between saw teeth.
